Eugene J. Bhattacharya

Eugene J. Bhattacharya - Criminal and Administrative Law

Mr. Bhattacharya has practiced law for 32 years. He has experience defending all types of criminal cases. He has successfully defended drinking and driving offences, domestic assaults, homicide, including murder, driving causing death cases, sexual assaults, fraud and property-related offences. He has also defended weapons offences, drug offences, and all other types of criminal and quasi-criminal offences.

Mr. Bhattacharya also has extensive experience with professional discipline cases and regulatory matters, which include appearances before the License Appeal Tribunal, the Law Society of Ontario Tribunal and the Justices of the Peace Review Council. He has substantial experience in defending complaints against judicial officers, lawyers and paralegals, police officers, real estate agents, real estate brokers, Insurance Brokers, Accountants, and other professionals who are subject to licensing and regulation by the government.

Mr. Bhattacharya has practiced family law for over 30 years. He has conducted family trials in the Ontario Court of Justice and in the Superior Court of Justice in Ontario. He has also litigated against Children's Aid Societies on matters involving child protection proceedings. He has experience with expert witnesses in dealing with valuation issues, as well as custody issues, and has settled hundreds of family cases throughout the course of his career.

Mr. Bhattacharya also has experience with civil matters involving personal injury, breach of contract, other tort claims and has been retained by other counsel for legal opinions and assistance.

Mr. Bhattacharya immigrated to Newfoundland as a child and he completed his Bachelor of Science in 1983 at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He received his law degree (L.L.B.) from the University of New Brunswick in 1986 and was called to the bar in Newfoundland in 1987 after completing articles with Paul D. Dicks, Q.C. in Corner Brook, Newfoundland.

Mr. Bhattacharya articled with Michael Lamont in Hamilton prior to his call to the bar in Ontario in 1988. He opened his practice in 1988 and has worked in the Region of Peel ever since.

Mr. Bhattacharya is a regular attendee at the Federation of Law Societies' week-long law programs and has attended both the Criminal Law and Family Law Education Programs. He has been an educator and speaker for many legal education programs and has served as an instructor at the Ontario Bar Admissions course. Mr. Bhattacharya has been involved in professional legal organizations throughout the course of his career. He has served on the Executive and is past President for both the Peel Criminal Lawyers Association and the Peel Law Association.

Mr. Bhattacharya has many other experiences outside the formal practice of law, including Special Constable with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police while at law school in 1984, and working as a professional musician during his time in university. Mr. Bhattacharya has been married for over 25 years and has two adult children.
